Abstract
We review some key hard X-ray (HXR) observations obtained from the Yohkoh and the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) spacecraft that recast our understanding of particle acceleration in solar flares:
-
1.
Above-the-loop-top hard X-ray sources.
-
2.
Conjugacy and simultaneity of double footpoint hard X-ray sources.
-
3.
Electron time-of-flight measurements and scaling law.
-
4.
Dichotomy of Hard X-ray time structures.
-
5.
Electron trapping time measurements.
-
6.
Bi-directionality of electron beams.
These key observations provide promising new constraints for particle acceleration models.
