Metathesis Depolymerization Chemistry as a Means of Recycling Polymers to Telechelics and Fine Organic Chemicals

  • Chapter
Metathesis Polymerization of Olefins and Polymerization of Alkynes

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 506))

Abstract

Polymer recycling is a subject of significant importance in today’s society, both for economic and social reasons. Over the years, many approaches have been used to extract value from waste materials, approaches which can be divided into three broad categories: 1) polymers can either be recycled chemically through degradation or depolymerization chemistry; 2) they can be recycled physically through thermal reshaping into objects of lesser value than the originals but still useful in selected applications; or, 3) waste polymers can simply be burned to extract their heat value. All three categories have been addressed extensively in many parts of the world.
