Attachment of Rhizobiaceae to Plant Cells

  • Chapter
The Rhizobiaceae

Abstract

Rhizobiaceae are a family of free-living soil bacteria. Thanks to special properties, these bacteria can escape from poor soil conditions by spending a part of their lifetime in or on a plant. During this stage of life, many of them are attached to the surface of plant cells. The varied structure of plant cell walls offers several possibilities for physicochemical interactions, ranging from hydrophobic interactions to ligand-receptor binding. Among the Rhizobiaceae, Agrobacterium and (Sino/Meso/Brady/Azo) Rhizobium (the latter group referred to as rhizobia) have been studied in some detail with regard to their attachment properties. These genera will be discussed in this chapter.
