Abstract
Audio transport over packet-switched (as apart from time division multiplexed) digital networks was tried at least as early as 1970 at NPL [1]. The NPL system used delta/sigma modulation and the transmit and receive clocks were derived from the 60 kHz long-wave standard frequency transmission. Because of the substantial buffers in the system the link could be broken for several seconds without data loss (the output data was played at high speed until the backlog was cleared).
