Abstract

Smithers (1996) argues that AI in Design needs Knowledge Level (KL) theories of designing and Smithers (1998) presents anoutline for a KL theory of designing, known as K L DE0 . This paper presents an experimental test of of this theory. A test which was designed to be practical, and which was intended to establish if K L DEOis on the “right track” or not, rather try to establish conclusive evidence for or against it. A new type font for slide presentations was designed and the design process subjected to a Knowledge Level analysis. This analysis was then compared to what K L DEO says. The outcome of this comparison shows K L DE0 to be largely correct, though probably too simple is certain respects, and incomplete in certain others.

In a world rife with unsolicited messages, typography must often draw attention to itself before it will be read. Yet in order to be read, it must relinquish the attention it has drawn. — Robert Bringhurst, The Elements of Typographical Style, 1992.
