Abstract

Ocimum basilicum L. commonly known as sweet basil or french basil is one of the members of family Lamiacea. Plants belonging to this family have natural oil of commercial importance. Sweet basil oil is used in perfume, cosmetic and flavour industry (1). The oil is conventionally extracted by steam distillation from leaves and flowering tops. Basil oil has sweet test and has a typical aniside like odour due the presence of methyle chavicol.
