Deuterium Labelling Studies of Cation Radicals

  • Chapter
Radical Ionic Systems

Part of the book series: Topics in Molecular Organization and Engineering ((MOOE,volume 6))

Abstract

The cations formed by one electron oxidation of neutral molecules are radicals and hence amenable to ESR study. However, their highly reactive nature and difficulties with their generation have been obstacles to the study of representative organic and inorganic cation radicals This changed with the development of halocarbon and noble gas matrix isolation techniques combined with ionizing radiations as applied to ESR spectroscopy by Shida [1] and Knight [2] about one decade ago. Since then, a large number of novel cation radicals have been investigated by this method. Among them, the studies on hydrocarbon cations are prominent. Most of the isotope labelled hydrocarbon cations studied are deuterium (2D) labelled ones, little having been reported so far on carbon-13 (13C) labelled cations. In this chapter we are concerned with the 2D-labelling studies of hydrocarbon cations. The reader is referred to previous review articles [3,4,5,6,7,8] and other chapters in this book for a more complete coverage of other aspects of cation radical spectroscopy.
