Abstract
A chapter on surveys may seem anomalous in a volume on monitoring where the differences between the two activities are so clearly defined. However, national species distribution surveys provide one of the fundamental baselines of information against which monitored information may be put in a wider context, in particular, information on the occurrence of species.
