Abstract
Whether or not the appearance of this volume is viewed as a turning point in the evaluation of clinical data, the period from which this work arises represents an important watershed. We are in the midst of a transformation in the way people think about clinical trials: their purpose, what they should be telling us, and the tools we need to make them more useful.
