Present State of Transplant Production Practices in Japanese Horticultural Industry

  • Chapter
Transplant Production Systems

Abstract

Transplant production in Japan has increased dramatically since 1985. This paper presents an in-depth, state-of-the-art review of plug transplant production practices in the horticultural industry of Japan. The current problems like labour shortage and the advantages such as labour saving, reduced time to produce a crop, uniformity of harvesting time and end-products plus other beneficial effects are narrated. Growth requirements and maintenance in the raising of plug transplants as well as environmental conditions, nutrition, irrigation, transportation and delivery systems are presented. New technology or modified methods of grafting techniques in transplants, its uses, and the necessary grafting conditions to be met are also enumerated. For instance, robotization and an upgraded version of the whip grafting method manually, are illustrated.
