Environmental Influences on Galaxy Morphology

  • Chapter
Clusters and Superclusters of Galaxies

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 366))

Abstract

Populations of galaxies show systematic variations with environment, which reach an extreme in the cores of rich clusters. This review describes the nature of these variations and attempts to identify those factors in the galaxies environment which are responsible for them. There is evidence that the environment exerts its effect over the entire history of the galaxy, rather than just at the time of formation, but which of many candidate processes are most important is not yet clear.
