Factors that affect the carotenoid composition of higher plants and algae

  • Chapter
Carotenoids in Photosynthesis

Abstract

The photosynthetic tissues of higher plants contain a range of pigments, including chlorophylls a and b and a number of carotenoids (carotenes and xanthophylls). These pigments are bound to proteins in the pigment-protein complexes of the thylakoid membrane (see Section 6.1.1), where they have a direct and essential role in photosynthesis (see Chapters 3 and 8). Small amounts of carotenoids may also be located in the plastid envelope (see Chapter 3), perhaps reflecting a role for this membrane in carotenoid biosynthesis. Under certain conditions (for example, reflecting the development of leaves), some carotenoids (often in high amounts) may be found in oil droplets or osmiophilic globules either inside or outside the plastid (e.g. the synthesis of the retro-carotenoid rhodoxanthin in bronzed leaves of Thuja spp.). As these carotenoids have no apparent function in photosynthesis or in photoprotection they will not be considered. Thus, except where stated, this chapter refers to the function and fate of those carotenoids which are specifically bound to the photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes, and probably have an active role in photosysnthesis.
