Abstract

We study a quantum theoretical picture describing optical near-field and the photon scanning tunneling microscope (PSTM). We introduce an intuitive virtual photon model using Yukawa potential which is based on the fact that the fundamental process of PSTM is the quasi-static short-range interaction between microscopic objects. A similarity between particle tunneling and optical near-field problem is demonstrated, and the resolution of PSTM is analyzed by using the virtual photon picture. We investigate the atomic interaction with localized evanescent field and propose a novel technique of single atom manipulation using a nanometric optical fiber-probe of PSTM.
