Abstract

Plant movement can be induced or controlled by light. In a broad sense such responses are called photomovement (photomovement sensu lato). However, the present chapter excludes the growth curvature- and turgor-based cell-shape changes (which are indeed plant movements), discussed in Chapters 9.2 and 9.3. Thus, here, photomovement sensu stricto comprises locomotion of whole organisms (mostly unicells or cell colonies) and intracellular movement (displacement of cell organelles) under the regulatory influence of light. Both phenomena will be discussed separately, and afterwards similarities and differences between them will be pointed out.
