Defence-Related Gene Expression in Barley Coleoptile Cells Following Infection by Septoria Nodorum

Part of the book series: Developments in Plant Pathology ((DIPP,volume 2))

Abstract

Defence-related gene expression during an incompatible interaction between barley coleoptiles cells and Septoria nodorwn has been examined. Transcripts homologous to a wheat peroxidase gene increase early in the defence reponse, whereas those homologous to leaf-specific thionins appear much later during the reaction. Fourteen infection-induced clones were isolated by differential screening a cDNA library constructed from infected coleoptile tissue and seven were further characterized. One of these clones was identical to the barley β-1,3-1,4-glucanase gene, while the other three are, as yet, unidentified.
