Kopetdagh-Khorassan Flora: Regional Features of Central Kopetdagh

  • Chapter
Biogeography and Ecology of Turkmenistan

Part of the book series: Monographiae Biologicae ((MOBI,volume 72))

Abstract

Four elementary floras are separated within the Central Kopetdagh floristic district. A comparative analysis reveals diversity of the regional flora (1,482 species belonging to 568 genera and 98 families) and its high endemism (249 endemic species, or 16.6%) as well as connections to neighboring floras (37% of species have Ancient Mediterranean or East Mediterranean ranges, and 22% of species have Middle Asian ranges). Rare plant species are discussed in terms of dynamics and evolution of local flora. Degradation of mountain steppe communities have facilitated dispersal of the foothill sagebrush vegetation upwards, thus creating basis for anthropogenic desertification of mountain landscapes. Considerations of conservation strategies for Central Kopetdagh are given.
