Abstract

This is an overview of the most recent state of knowledge of the physical and dynamical oceanography of the Mediterranean Sea. This interesting, almost isolated oceanic system provides a “laboratory basin” for fundamental oceanic processes of global relevance. The three major components of this non-linear system including: i) air-sea interactions, ii) water mass formation and transformation, and iii) multiscale circulation elements and structures, are discussed; and the most recent observational and modelling research efforts which have led to substantial new information are reviewed. The historical maps are examined for their information in light of the present knowledge.
