  • Chapter
Halophytes as a resource for livestock and for rehabilitation of degraded lands

Part of the book series: Tasks for Vegetation Science ((TAVS,volume 32))

Abstract

Salinity has substantial adverse social and economic effects in Morocco causing deteriorating agricultural productivity in many irrigated perimeters. A bio saline approach has been considered to establish forage production in arid rangelands in the southern part of Morocco using saline irrigation water. A collaborative project involving the United Kingdom and Morocco, aims to select halophytic specit s adapted to the local conditions, and to determine the optimal methods for their establishment and their suitability as forage. This paper reviews the work conducted on the introduction, development and use of halophytes as fodder, and as trees for revegetation. Trials are also underway on the introduction of ornamental plants to be irrigated with saline water and used for landscaping and gardening.
