Expanding the Production and Use of Cool Season Food Legumes

Part of the book series: Current Plant Science and Biotechnology in Agriculture ((PSBA,volume 19))

Abstract

The first conference in this series was held in Spokane, Washington, USA in 1986 (Summerfield, 1988). It was a major event (400 participants from 48 countries) in which 91 papers focused much needed attention on the major cool season food legumes, viz. pea (Pisum sativum), lentil (Lens culinaris), faba bean (Vicia faba), and chickpea (Cicer arietinum). It was a great success: it brought together scientists working on all aspects of these crops from a wide range of disciplines — and from basic science to marketing and extension. The proceedings (Summerfield, 1988) are still an essential reference for anyone seriously concerned with these crops.
