Polarization of the 2175 Å Feature

Abstract

Although the 2175Å feature in the interstellar extinction curve is often attributed to absorption by small particles of graphite, the identification is not secure. Any further characterization of the carrier would be valuable. One question is whether the feature is polarized. Polarization properties in the 2175Å region put important constraints on the asphericity, optical anisotropy, and alignment of the carrier. Ultraviolet spectropolarimetric observations have now been reported for several bright reddened Galactic stars. These made use of the WUPPE experiment on the Astro-1 mission (Wolff, Clayton, & Meade 1993) and the Faint Object Spectrograph of the Hubble Space Telescope (Somerville et al. 1994a,b); the latter have somewhat higher spectral resolution and signal-to-noise. A polarization signature accompanying the 2175Å feature appears to be rare. Both the observations and the theoretical interpretation are discussed.
