Abstract
Oats rank sixth in world cereal production following wheat, maize, rice, barley, and sorghum. World production of oats, however, has been trending downward due, in part, to increased mechanization, to increased emphasis placed on competitive crops yielding greater amounts of energy or protein per hectare, or to increased specialization in agriculture requiring less crop rotation and more chemical usage. Grain yields of oats have been greatest in countries such as Germany, Sweden, Finland, France, and the United Kingdom because of good varieties, intensive cultural management practices, and relatively good weather conditions.
