Abstract
First indications of magnetospheric convection were derived by relating the magnetic perturbations on the ground to an overhead ionospheric Hall current (Axford and Hines, 1961). The direct measurement of ionospheric drifts with the Ba ion cloud technique (Haerendel et al., 1967; Föppl et al., 1968; Haerendel and Lüst, 1968; Wescott et al., 1969) and of the electrostatic field by probes flown with rockets and satellites (Mozer and Bruston, 1967; Aggson, 1969; Heppner, 1969; Gurnett, 1970) and balloons (Mozer and Serlin, 1969) was a step forward.
