The Development of Philosophy and Marxism-Leninism in Poland Since the War

Studies in Soviet Thought

Part of the book series: Sovietica ((SOVA,volume 7))

Abstract

The last sixty years have perhaps constituted the most remarkable period in the history of philosophy in Poland. Never before were so many talents and abilities attracted to philosophy, to make valuable contributions toward its development. Poland, after the First World War, having regained its own statehood and organised its institutions of teaching and research, became one of the important centres of philosophical inquiry 2. Polish logicians (L. Chwistek, S. Leśniewski, J. Łukasiewicz, A. Tarski) and philosophers (K. Ajdukiewicz, T. Czezowski, T. Kotarbiński, Z. Zawirski) promoted new trends and opened fresh fields of research. They reared the second generation of logicians and philosophers, who have continued the tradition established by the founders of the Warsaw school. Among those internationally known are the logicians, J. M. Bocheński, A. Grzegorczyk, S. Jaśkowski, A. Lindenbaum 3, J. Łoś, A. Mostowski, H. Rasiowa, J. Słupecki, B. Sobociński, M. Wajsberg 3, and the philosophers, J. Hosiasson 3, M. Kokoszyrńska, J. Kotarbińska, H. Mehlberg, M. Ossowska and S. Ossowski 4.

  1. This is a partial summary of a larger study, “Philosophy and Ideology” (to appear soon in the series “Sovietica”), which, in addition to describing the philosophical developments in Poland in the years 1918–1958, includes a critical examination of the logical, methodological and epistemological theories of Marxist-Leninist philosophy

  4. The most comprehensive account of the philosophical development in Poland in the inter-war period is to be found in Bochenski, J. M: Laphilosophie. In: Pologne 19191939, vol. 3: Vie intellectuelle et artistique. Neuchatel. 1947. pp. 229–260. A more specialized survey is provided by Ajdukiewicz, K.: Der logistische Antiirrationalismus in Polen. In: Erkenntnis 5,1935,151–161. Jordan, Z.: The Development of Mathematical Logic and of Logical Positivism in Poland between the Two Wars. London. 1945, covers very much the same ground as Ajdukiewicz’s survey but in greater detail.

For a more comprehensive, but not exhaustive, list of those who died in the period September 1939 - March 1946, see Olszewicz, B.: Lista strat kultury polskiej. Warszawa. Wydawnictwo S. Arcta. 1947. The list includes scholars, scientists, artists, men of letters, politicians, doctors, technicians and other members of the professional classes. The list comprises some 4,400 names. About half of those listed were either shot by the firing-squads of the German army or perished in the concentration camps. All the universities were closed down, many libraries were destroyed or removed to Germany. The same applies to the equipmen t of research institutes. Individuals suffered losses to their private book collections and manuscripts of works prepared for publication. In the Warsaw rising (1944) a whole generation of graduates and young research-workers, some of them of great promise, was decimated in the fighting against the Germans or exterminated by atrocities inflicted upon the population of the devastated but unconquered city.
