Abstract
Some of us sometimes understand some of what is said. The problem is to understand how we manage to do this. The matter is complex. No reasonably complete answer is at present possible. We maunder about in ignorance. But only the barest speculative sketch is aimed at here: a few possible bones will be provided on which flesh may some day be hung.
