Abstract

In view of the enormous practical difficulties that one encounters in trying to solve the exact equations governing particles and fields in the magnetosphere one has to use simplifying assumptions. Unfortunately, the same simplifying factors are not uniformly applicable to the entire magnetosphere, so that the existing quantitative results have fairly limited ranges of applicability. This is the reason why this paper deals with the theory of the tail of the magnetosphere only, and in fact we are probably covering only a fraction of the tail, namely radial distances from the Earth between, say 20 and 60 R E.
