Abstract
Total parenteral nutrition (tpn) has been invaluable in providing nutrients and aiding the restoration of body mass in patients with serious gastrointestinal diseases and malnutrition. A major metabolic objective in such patients is to conserve or augment the lean body mass. Since the basic structural constituent of lean tissue is protein, it is clear that the retention and efficient utilization of amino acids for protein synthesis is central to a successful programme of tpn.
