Hydrochemistry of Lakes of Tajikistan

Lake Issyk-Kul: Its Natural Environment

Part of the book series: NATO Science Series ((NAIV,volume 13))

Abstract

There are about 1500 lakes in the Pamirs [2, 5], including small (≤1 km2) lakes with total water surface area over 680 km2, which make 97.5% of the total number but only 9% of their total area. The water chemistry of lakes in the Pamirs has very limited literature. An overview of Pamir research through 100 years from 1871–1971 [1] presents data on the geomorphology, geology, meteorology, soil science, flora, and fauna of this high-altitude land, but no data on this subject. At the same time knowledge of water chemistry allows to estimate the fresh water resources of Tajikistan as a potential source of drinking and irrigation water.
