Abstract

In towns and cities of north-eastern Ukraine, urbanisation has caused major changes to the hydrodynamics and quality of groundwater. Reduced pumping combined with leaking water supply systems and sewers have further altered the flow regime in recent years resulting in severe under flooding over large areas. The problem is now regarded as a national concern of great urgency. Solutions are complex and will require an integrative approach to decision-making. Adoption of the Under Flooding State Action Plan will be an important first step in resolving the problem.
