The Late Precambrian Central North American Rift System — A Survey of Recent Geological and Geophysical Investigations

Abstract

Geological and geophysical data reveal a partially buried belt of late Precambrian Keweenawan igneous and sedimentary rocks, over 2000 km long, in the heart of the North American continent. The dimensions of the zone, its association with prodigious volumes of flood basalts, and an absence of underlying granitic crust suggest that it is a continental rift, and perhaps a remnant of a global-wide rift system that existed 1.0–1.2 b.y. ago.
