Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((ASIC,volume 36))

Abstract

Major and trace element studies of basic lavas from the northern part of the Kenya Rift show that the lavas erupted along the axial zone of the Rift have become progressively less under-saturated with time from basanites and alkali basalts in the Miocene to transitional basalts in the Quaternary. The lavas erupted outside the Rift and in the subsidiary Kavirondo Rift are more undersaturated types.

The East African Geological Research Unit work, directed by Professor B. C. King, has been supported by the Ministry of Overseas Development (O.D.M.), the Government of the Republic of Kenya, the Natural Environment Research Council (N.E.R.C.) and the Central Research Fund of the University of London
