Larvae of North American Carabidae with a Key to the Tribes

  • Chapter
Carabid Beetles

Abstract

Ground beetles are a major component of the agricultural ecosystem (Esau & Peters, 1975; Fox, 1974; Fox & MacLellan, 1956; Frank, 1971; Kirk, 1971; Rivard, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1974; Whitcomb & Bell, 1964). All of these papers deal with adult ground beetles. Only one recent paper (Kirk, 1972) has dealt extensively with larvae in agricultural habitats. Larval carabids have been and are neglected in ecological studies because of (1) the difficulties involved in rearing larvae to the adult stage, and (2) the lack of adequate identification aids.
