Interactions of Macrophages with Intravacuolar Bacteria and Protozoa

  • Chapter
Mononuclear Phagocytes

Abstract

The protozoan, Toxoplasma gondii, and the bacterium, Chlamydia psittaci, are obligate intracellular microbes (Jacobs 1973; Moulder 19 71). In our laboratory we have examined the biology of the interaction between mammalian host macrophages and these two organisms. We have examined this interaction in vitro to document characteristics of their growth and the mechanism of inhibition of this growth within cells exposed to lymphocytes of lymphocyte products from immune animals.
