Lysozyme and Plasminogen Activator: Constitutive and Induced Secretory Products of Mononuclear Phagocytes

  • Chapter
Mononuclear Phagocytes

Abstract

Recent studies have shown that macrophages are not only highly specialized phagocytic cells, but that these cells also synthesize and secrete a variety of biologically active products into their extracellular environment. Macrophage products include enzymes such as lysozyme and several neutral proteinase activities, e.g., plasminogen activator(s), collagenase and elastase, complement components, a pyrogen, and factors which influence the growth and function of bone marrow stem cells and lymphocytes (Table 1). The molecular characterization of these products is incomplete and the biological function of many macromolecules found in macrophage culture fluids remains unknown. The mechanism of synthesis, intracellular transport, and discharge of macrophage secretory products is also obscure, as is the relationship between secretory activity and endocytosis. The term secretion is often used rather loosely and may include products shed from the cell surface or derived from extracellular molecules, as well as products sequestered and released by a vesicular mechanism.
