Biogeography of the New Guinea Aradidae (Heteroptera)

Biogeography and Ecology of New Guinea

Part of the book series: Monographiae Biologicae ((MOBI,volume 42))

Abstract

The Aradidae is a large, cosmopolitan family of sucking bugs which share the almost universal food source of fungal juices associated with dying, dead or decaying wood. For this habit they have evolved mouthparts of sucking stylets, longer than the body, which coil inside the head when retracted (Spooner, 1920); this feature sets them apart, with the termitophilous Termitaphididae, as an isolated superfamily Aradoidea among the pentatomomorph Heteroptera.
