The present state of knowledge of the parameters affecting ionisation and recombination, and the reaction kinetics and mobilities of electrons and molecular ions in non-polar liquids reviewed. A historical perspective of the development of this knowledge is given and where possible, pictorial representations of the processes involved are attempted.
