Ocular Tissue Characterization by RF-Signal Analysis: Summary of the Bonn/Stuttgart in Vivo-Study

  • Conference paper
Ophthalmic Ultrasonography

Abstract

The Bonn/Stuttgart group presented in 1973 results of the first comprehensive study on computer-aided tissue characterization on the eye in vitro, using empirical analysis of video (A-mode)-signals*** (Trier and Reuter 1973; Decker et al. 1973). 1973–1977, techniques for utilization of RF-signals in the 5–25 MHz frequency range were developed for the same applications** (Trier 1974; BMFT-DFVLR, Final report 1978). In the period 1977–81, the developed system and the techniques for RF-signal acquisition and processing were tested in vivo in clinical routine on the eyes of patients and volunteers by the Bonn group (BMFT-DFVLR, Final Report 1982). For that purpose the techniques for data collection, A/D conversion, intermediate storage, data structure, system controls, and processing methods were continuously adapted to the clinical needs. Preliminary results were presented at the SIDUO VII and VIII Conferences (Decker and Trier 1979; Trier et al. 1981).
