Mechanisms of PAH Formation and Destruction in Flames Relation to Organic Particulate Emissions

  • Chapter
Mobile Source Emissions Including Policyclic Organic Species

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 112))

Abstract

The formation and destruction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in flames have been extensively investigated during the last 20 years. Although many questions remain to be answered, some important steps have been elucidated. Profiles of PAH concentration in premixed and diffusion flames indicate that formation of PAH occurs very early in the process and is followed by PAH destruction either by burn-out or through formation of soot particles.

PAH emission in exhaust gases results from competition between those two processes (formation and destruction), and are discussed with special emphasis on the following points:

  • — Formation of PAH from aliphatic and aromatic fuels.

  • — Role of aromatic and acetylenic species in PAH formation.

  • — Distinction between PAH as stable by products, PAH as reactive intermediates and PAH containing heteroelements (N,O,S).

  • — Relation between PAH and soot.
