Input of Acidifiers and Heavy Metals to a German Forest Area Due to Dry and Wet Deposition

  • Chapter
Effects of Accumulation of Air Pollutants in Forest Ecosystems

Abstract

Concentrations and deposition of the soluble ions Cl-, NO3 -, SO4 = NH4 + 4 and the heavy metals Mn, Fe, Cd, Pb were measured without ana within a beech and a spruce forest during several months of 1980. The amounts of dry deposition fluxes to the canopies are compared with wet deposition and flux measurements of other publications. Filtering of aerosol constituents by the canopies is evaluated and related to the size of the particles. Deposition velocities of the aerosol compounds onto the canopies are given. They characterize forests as a considerable sink for atmospheric particulate trace constituents.
