Abstract
Acid soils transform part of incoming strong acids into Al-ions. These cation acids are often bound to the exchange complex of the soil. Another mode of storage for Al-ions in the soil is the precipitation of basic aluminum sulfates. It is shown by calculated titration curves from simplified soil chemical equilibrium models that substances like the mineral jurbanite (AlOHSO4) can be understood as acids, bound to the soil matrix, but still rather soluble. Evidence from the Soiling research area, for probable accumulation of basic aluminum sulfate in that soils, is presented.
