Hematologic Problems of Dialysis Patients

  • Chapter
Replacement of Renal Function by Dialysis

Abstract

The kidney has a unique relationship to red cell production because of its production of the hormone erythropoietin (ESF). The development of anemia in almost all patients with chronic renal failure, therefore, is not surprising and is a major factor in preventing total rehabilitation with maintenance dialysis therapy. Several detailed reviews of erythropoietin have been published recently (1–4).
