Extrarenal Renin-Angiotensin System: Comments on its Occurrence and Cardiovascular Role

  • Chapter
Topics in Pathophysiology of Hypertension

Part of the book series: Developments in Cardiovascular Medicine ((DICM,volume 30))

Abstract

The discovery of renin in the arterial wall by Jimenez-Diaz et al. [1], salivary gland renin by Werle et al. [2], and brain renin by Ganten et al. [3] has given rise to speculation that angiotensin formed locally, and not of plasma origin, must have a significant physiological role. Sufficient proof is available for its occurrence in these areas, but its exact role is yet to be determined.
