Recent trends in spatial organisation of a tropical frontier region in Brazil (1966–1981)

Abstract

A new phase in the exploration and economic exploitation of the Amazon region, the largest tropical rain forest area in the world, began in 1966. After the economic cycles (especially in the rubber sector) which had hitherto been more spontaneous and dependent upon world markets, the Brazilian government decided to initiate controlled development of the Amazonian lowlands. A regional planning authority specifically for the Amazonian region, the Superintendência do Desenvolvimento da Amazônia (SUDAM), has been re-established with a view to re-organizing the planning after the mainly abortive attempts of the SPVEA (Superintendência do Plano de ValorizaÇão Econômica da Amazônia) and to implement the new government’s specific economic objectives for this region.
