Abstract
One way of comparing two theories T,T’ is to reduce T to T’ in a formal sense. Much has been written about different intuitions on reduction and several meta-scientific concepts of reduction have been proposed; hut few examples have been used by way of detailed examination in order tgx throw light on those meta-scientific concepts. Of course, there are numerous examples of reduction in the ordinary (i.e.“non-meta”) scientific literature. But usually meta-scientific concepts of reduction cannot be directly applied to such examples: the “ordinary” treatments may be too vague, too sloppy, too incomplete,or they may use special assumptions so that actually only very small fragments of the theories are involved.
