Abstract

The genus Cicer, earlier classified in the tribe Vicieae of the legume family, along with vetches, lentils, and faba beans, is now classified in its own tribe, the Cicereae Alef.. Kupicha (1977) found that pollen morphology and vascular anatomy set Cicer species further apart from the other members of Vicieae (Lathyrus, Lens, Vicia, Pisum, and Vavilovia) and closer to the tribe Trifolieae, which differs from the Cicereae only in having hypogeal germination, tendrils, stipules free from the petiole and nonpapillate unicellular hairs.
