Abstract

The lentil (Lens culinaris Med.) is an annual, self-pollinating, pulse crop which is commonly grown around the Mediterranean and in parts of south and west Asia. Its area of cultivation around the world amounted to 1.84 million hectares in 1980, at an average yield of 655 kg/ha (Anonymous, 1981). India is by far the largest producer (Figure 27).
