Abstract
Since 1973 326 patients with a uveal melanoma have been examined in the Leiden University Eye Clinic. Three hundred and five eyes of 304 patients were enucleated because of a choroidal or ciliary body melanoma; one patient with the dysplastic naevus or familial atypical multiple mole melanoma (FAMMM) syndrome had a choroidal melanoma in both eyes. In 4 patients local resection of ciliary body melanoma was performed. Three rather old patients were successfully treated by photocoagulation in view of their age; all died from non-tumour-related causes. Eight patients were not treated for various reasons; one had clinical signs of metastasis at the time of diagnosis, the other 7 have been carefully observed up till now. Seven patients have been treated with local irradiation by ruthenium-106 or cobalt-60 applicators.
