Abstract

Let us start with a quotation from Section 5.5 of Jeffries’ (1968) textbook which summarized the status of the astrophysical redistribution problem about 17 years ago:

“Until better theoretical calculations and laboratory spectroscopy can give us a guide, we can probably do nothing but adopt the results given above. In general, we may suppose that tie line cores, at least, of resonance lines are formed by a mechanism approaching that of complete redistribution, while the wings of thefirst resonance line in a series may have a significant degree of essentially coherent scattering; for the later resonance lines we shall find less coherence. If the line is collisionally broadened it seems legitimate to suppose it to be formed in complete redistribution in the core and wings”.
