Abstract
The ability of Rhizobium bacteria to invade plants and stimulate the host to develop nodules depends upon a series of genes, including the nodulation (nod) and host range (host specific nod) genes (Kondorosi et al, 1984; Jacobs et al, 1985), as well as loci which influence the state of the bacterial cell surface and probably other genes not yet specified. The bacterium Rhizobium meliloti invades alfalfa (lucerne, genus Medicago), and a few other genera of plants. We have analyzed the genes which R. meliloti requires for symbiosis with alfalfa, and report here our studies on the map and sequence of four of these genes, together with identification of their protein products, and the analysis of conditions for their expression.
