Electrochemical Behavior of Laser-Processed Metal Surfaces

  • Chapter
Laser Surface Treatment of Metals

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 115))

Abstract

Laser processing of a metal surface can modify its corrosion behavior by altering the surface composition, microstructure, or distribution of impurities and second phases. Examples considered include: anodic behavior of Fe-Cr binary alloys, effect of laser surface melting on the pitting of type 304 stainless steel, preparation and pitting behavior of Mo-bearing surface stainless steel alloys, the effect of laser melting on the corrosion of aluminum and aluminum bronzes, laser-formed amorphous surface alloys, and the use of laser processing for consolidation of metallic coatings. Suggestions for further research are also given.
