Structural analysis of the coronary and retinal arterial tree

  • Chapter
Quantitative Coronary and Left Ventricular Cineangiography

Abstract

Main emphasis in earlier chapters has been on the accurate and reproducible assessment of the severity of coronary obstructions from magnified portions of 35 mm cineframes. No attention has been given to the possibilities of frame- to-frame analysis of the entire coronary tree from nonmagnified images for research or diagnostic purposes. If one would be able to determine in a semi- or fully-automated manner the centerlines and boundaries of all major-branches and side-branches of the coronary arterial system in each frame over a complete cardiac cycle, a number of clinically relevant questions could possibly be answered. Among these are:

  1. (1)

Automated search for locations of coronary lesions exceeding a certain percentage diameter or area narrowing.

  2. (2)

Computer-identification of the anatomy of the coronary tree and automated classification of the tree in one of a number of structure classes.

  3. (3)

Research towards the possibly existing relation between the physical configuration of the coronary tree and the presence or development of coronary artery disease.

  4. (4)

Assessment of epicardial contraction patterns by using the arterial bifurcations as landmarks.
